What is a Dental Bridge?
In dentistry, a bridge is a dental prosthetic that replaces a missing tooth. A bridge literally spans the gap for the purposes of aesthetics and function.
During your visit to Smïl, if you need a tooth replacement, we take the time to discuss all of the suitable dental treatments with you.
What types of bridges are there?
A bridge can be divided into two categories based on its construction – wing bridges and bonded bridges.
Winged bridges are prosthetic teeth attached to adjacent teeth with a small “wing”. This is a relatively non-invasive way of fitting a bridge and sometimes requires very little preparation stage. A bonded bridge requires more tooth preparation. The neighbouring teeth/tooth needs to be reduced in size for a “crown-like” covering to bond to the natural tooth. This crown has the prosthetic tooth attached, which sits snugly into the space left by a missing tooth.
At Smïl, we are fully digitalised, which means no messy impression moulds being taken. We use the iTero scanner to create an accurate 3D scan of your mouth for accuracy and comfort.
What do bridges look like?
The appearance of a porcelain bridge is very similar to that of your natural teeth. The materials used will vary based on the bridge type. They are made by highly skilled dental technicians in a dental laboratory. Up to two weeks are required to make a dental bridge in most cases. You will be provided with an aesthetically pleasing temporary bridge whilst this is underway.
Could there be another way to fill the space left by missing teeth?
There are alternatives for a replacement tooth. The closest option to natural teeth is a dental implant. Another alternative is a removable denture.
